Open Bible Christian Center facility grew from a sanctuary with church offices in double wide trailer into the outstanding facility it is today. God has surely blessed the ministry of OBCC! On May 11, 1981 14.5 acres of land on East Saint Patrick Street was purchased. The property at that time was a trailer sales lot known as “Variety Sales” with the main building being a large warehouse and shop for working on trailer houses and a double-wide trailer house that housed the office for the business. The big warehouse was remodeled into what is now the chapel, foyer, and some Early Childhood rooms. The work began in earnest to transform the Variety Trailer Sales lot and buildings into a church. Approximately 80% of this work was done by volunteer labor under the capable direction of Pastor Ed Wood and Donald J. Mattson. During the ensuing months, it was interesting to watch the transformation of a pole barn into what ultimately became the sanctuary where we presently worship. It is conservatively estimated that it took 20,000 volunteer hours and $317,700.00 to complete the project. In 1985, with the inside remodeling of the facility complete, volunteers began working to enhance the outside of the building in the spring of 1985. They are preparing the roof to receive the now familiar orange metal roofing material. The 22,000 square foot building was finished inside and out and a dedication service planned. April 1, 1990—Groundbreaking : To allow for growth and adequate office space, the elders and staff broke ground for an office and education complex on the west side of the church. It was built debt free at a cost of approximately $220,000. The staff was excited not to come to the office in the double wide trailer and find the furnace out or the water frozen in the winter months. They didn’t miss the experience of crawling underneath the trailer to fix or thaw pipes. By an unanimous vote in 2001 the partners agreed to add the “Family Life Center” housing a gym, large youth room, large meeting room, classrooms, commercial kitchen, and offices. Ground was broken September 16, 2001. Pastor Les Potts and General Contractor Jim Meier of JMC and the some of the church leadership manned the shovels. Family Life Center Dedication with Governor Bill Janklow, and OBC President Jeff Farmer, Mt Plains Region Superintendent as guest speakers at the September 16, 2002 special dedication service. The 80,000 square feet now house a Preschool, K-12 School, full time daycare facility, 500 member capacity sanctuary/gymnasium and 250 capacity chapel/baptistry/drama performance arena. The Adult Christian Education wing services 250 plus students each Wednesday evening. The house of God is alive and well!
